a blue bird, a shower curtain, and a sliding glass door

... also known as my $4.89 shower curtain mistreatment ...

warning: really bad photography ahead. i couldn't take decent pics of this to save my life...

When I was in Target the other day, what did I spot on the clearance end-cap but the adorable brown & white toile shower curtain I had admired on other people's blogs for a few months. It has a cute little blue bird on it, and it was on clearance for guess how much? Yes. $4.89

I bought it with no clue what I'd do with it. I thought if nothing else it would make a cute tablecloth. Where else can you get that much fabric for under $5?

Then the other night my naked sliding glass door in my family room was just taunting me. You see, this room lacks natural light and we go through the slider all the time, so drapes wouldn't have worked. And it butts right up to my kitchen cabinets, so a rod is out of the question. I wanted to soften the door though, so I mustered up my courage, got out my supplies and got to work. This is what I ended up with:

It's sort of a faux gathered valance using the Nester's method of safety pins, ribbon, upholstery tacks and my finger (to shove in the tacks). I didn't even iron it. I think the Nester would be proud. And actually, I really really like it. Other than the fact that it caused me to redo all the accessories in the room from red accents to blue. And that caused me a near nervous breakdown the other night because I'm having a baby shower for my sister here in 2 weeks and of course want it to look perfect. But I'm not stressing or anything. Hee.

Hope you like it!

It's beautiful - I'm sure Nester would be proud.:)

There's nothing like having company to inspire me to clean up and do odd projects that I've been putting up.

I had it in my sticky little fingers at my Target and I put it back...I am sad now. I may check in tomorrow to see if one got hidden underneath a pile or something and by chance there is one left. I got NON-buyers remorse!! :)

I'm in love, I've searched every Target near me in Boston, Mom in NH and Aunt in Ohio. No such luck, but found it on eb&y. Should I get it?

You did an amazing job :)

Thank you all for the comments! Suzanne ~ don't you just HATE that? I have had that happen to me sooo many times.

Nancy - if it's cheap enough, I would. It's super cute and kind of Anthropologie-ish. Plus the fabric is really nice. Not very "shower-curtainish". Hope that helps.

It looks great! I'm a little upset though because when I bought it on clearance a few weeks back, I paid $8.99. Maybe I should have waited! Mine is in the fabric pile for our back room that I'm working on now. It will be turned into a pillow or two. :) Like you said, you can't find fabric for that price. And the curtain is so nice and soft.

Love what you did with it!

OMG..i have not seen that..love it..want it!

Michelle - then it probably wouldn't have been there. I wish I would have bought 2 then I could have had coordinating pillows in the room! I have buyer's remorse for not buying 2, or 3!

I ran to Target when I saw that curtain on 320 Sycamore...but they didn't have anymore. sigh. I wanted to use it for curtains in my Master. Ah well.

Your mistreatment is darling!!!

That looks AMAZING! I have sliding glass doors that I've been trying to do something with (they have nasty old vertical blinds currently) and your valance looks like a GREAT fit. I'll have to keep my eye out for some great fabric! The Nester would certainly be VERY proud.

Girls, I went to three Tarjays yesterday {even one the website swore had these in stock} and I searched high and low chicas. Nothing. I was so bummed. I should've bought 2 of these when I saw them!!! I am glad to have one, but I may have to ebay another one just to have in my stash!!!

This is gorgeous!!! I love it and I know The Nester would be proud! Way to go. Now I'm looking at my back door that is currently curtain-less and I'm thinking....hmmmm. I just may have to do this too. Thank you for the inspiration!

Popping over from Kimba's...that is so pretty! You did a fantastic job! I have looked for those shower curtains to no avail. You got lucky! : )

Hi came over from Kimba's.
Love what you did with the shower
curtain. Made an adorable valance.
I love to use tablecloths and sheets cause you get lots of fabric
for less if you can find them on sale. Great idea, and looks lovely, you should be proud of yourself.
Blessings, nellie
